Letters on kids and summer, highway upkeep and dogs

Diversify kids' activities

Summertime means a lot of free time for kids, and it's hot outside. It's easy to let them watch TV or play video games, but then they would miss out on enjoying the great outdoors.

Working with young kids this month reminded me that kids would rather take the easy road. As parents, we can utilize the benefits of the stress-reducing connection our souls have with the beauty in natural surroundings to help our kids be more successful in life; like yard work when it's cooler in the early mornings or evenings, or a nature hike, or a picnic by the lake.

Think fresh air and sunshine -in moderation of course. I taught kids the technique of deep breathing and stretching out their legs and arms in times of anger or stress, so they could think clearly. I also suggested that there was a prime time to get things they want from their parents – right after a meal when the kids have cleaned up the kitchen! Some kids looked at me like, 'If I did that, my parents would want me to do it all the time!' Routine is good for kids, and one of the best ways to have good kids is to enjoy mealtimes when everyone pitches in to help. Kids feel more secure and less stressed out when they have a nurturing routine, including breathing room for all family members. Do interactive play, teamwork on meal prep, and about 15 minutes housework everyday and the kids will want some time to themselves — then parents can relax too.

Let's rethink highway maintenance

Texas Department of Transportation Spokesman Larry Krantz indicated in the June 20 edition of the News-Journal that once a hot mix surfaced road gets to be 2-3 years old, it's time to start thinking about maintenance work such as seal coating.

A June 4, TxDOT press release states that "seal coating a mile of a two-lane Farm-To-Market road costs roughly $21,000."

I'm not a highway engineer or a cost engineer, but if it is time to start thinking about a $21,000 per mile maintenance job after 2-3 years perhaps the road should be constructed with a more durable material.

Let cities stick to city issues

Did you hear that the city council of San Antonio has denounced Longview for their recent animal control issues and Austin has told its workers not to come to Longview?

Who do they think they are?

Okay, that didn't happen but they did do that to Arizona. Are those cities, along with several others throughout the nation, so squeaky clean that they can throw stones at other glass houses? I've been to both of them and I don't think so, and I would bet that the Governor of Arizona doesn't either. If those cities feel so outraged of the pending new law in Arizona they should charter a bunch of buses and go pickup those poor illegal aliens being detained in Arizona detention centers (because they are illegal) and bring them to their cities and welcome them to stay. Let's open our Texas borders and let the flow of drugs come streaming in. It would help lower our drug cost and everything they couldn't smoke in Austin could be sold to other cities in the U.S. for a profit.

Maybe city councils should worry about city council issues and what affects their cities directly.

The Kids of Mud cycling series wrapped up with the fourth and final race this past weekend, and the Portage Junkyard Dogs team secured five first overall finishes in the standings and several more high placings.

"I'm so proud of everyone that participated this year," said head coach Dave Stanley. "Everyone really pushed it. There was nobody slacking off in the races, and all you can ask as a coach is that everybody gives their best. It was really impressive."

Kids of Mud Race #4 took place at the JYD-maintained Birch Ski Area course near Roseisle on Sunday, and a few local riders made up some ground in the standings on the final day.

One of those was Jenna Shackleton, who won the U15 female race by nearly three minutes to leapfrog her way to the top of the standings.
