Kids' Games awarded to Windsor Posted: 28 Jun 2010 06:29 PM PDT WINDSOR, Ont. — Windsor will host the International Children's Games in June 2013, officials announced Monday in Bahrain. Mayor Eddie Francis travelled solo to the Persian Gulf nation — where the current games are taking place — to make a two-hour Power Point presentation and answer questions for the International Children's Games Committee. Children's games president Torsten Rasch and secretary-general Richard Smith had toured Windsor in January. Windsor was the only competing city invited to make a presentation to the committee, which unanimously voted to send the games to Ontario. Francis was in transit Monday and could not be reached. But Gordon Orr, marketing and communication officer for the City of Windsor, called the news tremendous. "This is a major coup for us, to bring in a signature sporting event like this to Windsor and Essex County," Orr said. "We have demonstrated in the past that we can host events of this magnitude in our city. And we hope to do it again in the future." Between 1,500 and 2,000 coaches, delegates and athletes, aged 12 to 15, will converge on the area for the Children's Games, the only youth sporting event sanctioned by the International Olympic Committee. The estimated cost for travel, food, lodging, competition and opening and closing ceremonies is $2.5 million. But Orr said that many family members of competitors also travel to the region, paying their own way. "The media attention we will generate by hosting the games will be monumental," Orr said. "We're going to be sending out invitations around the world and all eyes will be on Windsor and Essex County." International Children's Games in the recent past have featured such sports as soccer, tennis, volleyball, athletics, basketball, gymnastics and swimming. One problem, however: Windsor does not have an Olympic-sized pool, which is required for the International Children's Games. But Orr said the city will team up with the University of Windsor and St. Clair College and will pursue every opportunity in order to stage a world-class event. "I am thrilled that Windsor has been chosen host city for the 2013 International Children's Games," local MPP Dwight Duncan said. "This is another opportunity for Windsor to showcase itself to the world and bring visitors to our great city." Duncan, the province's finance minister, said that Ontario had not received a formal request to help build a 50-metre pool but that the province will consider any proposal Windsor might submit. Jeff Cowan, a teacher and swim coach with the Windsor-Essex Swim Team who made a presentation to city hall encouraging councillors to do what they could to bring the games here, believes a proper aquatics facility will boost swimming in the area. "It's fantastic for the area," Cowan said. "We've had swimmers move away because they don't feel our facilities are adequate. We've done well with the pools we have but we could do a lot better with a proper facility." Cowan said his wish list for an aquatics centre is: 50-metre pool, warm-up pool, ample seating along one wall, an exercise facility, and possibly a diving structure that includes a 10-metre platform.
