Obama Wants Kids To Make Video GamesUS President Barack Obama has given his blessing to a challenge - open to both children and professional developers - aimed at getting kids designing educational video games.

The National STEM (science, technology, engineering & math) Video Game Challenge is hoping to get American kids more interested in learning about those fields, and thinks that educational video games could be just the ticket.

"Our success as a nation depends on strengthening America's role as the world's engine of discovery and innovation," the President says of the challenge. "I applaud partners in the National STEM Video Game Challenge for lending their resources, expertise, and their enthusiasm to the task of strengthening America's leadership in the 21st century by improving education in science, technology, engineering and math."

There are two prizes on offer, one for middle school students, another for professional developers, with a deadline for entries set at January 5.

Five games for Friday

Posted: 17 Sep 2010 02:37 AM PDT

All games kick off at 7:30 p.m.

• No. 6 Manteca (2-0) at No. 7 Enochs (2-1) at Johansen -- Manteca is putting up points by the bushel behind duo of QB Matt Burrows (458 yards, 4 TDs) and RB Robert Ladiges (335 yards, 7 TDs). Enochs' QB Christian Kahler was nearly flawless at Hilmar last week (15 of 19, 368 yards, 4 TDs), but Buffaloes will be bringing plenty of pressure.

• No. 10 Patterson (2-1) at No. 5 Escalon (2-0) -- Host Cougars allowed 35 last week to Linden, and Tigers will bring even more weapons to town. Spotlight on Escalon RB Josh Miguel (305 yards rushing, 142 receiving, 7 TDs), who faces a talented LB crew led by Adrian Laurel. The wild-card could be Patterson receiver Nick Ward: He's fast and 6-3, making him a tough matchup for a DB.

• Summerville (1-1) at Denair (1-1) -- Two of the more entertaining offensive kids in the district with S'ville QB Zach Roberson (551 yards, 3 TDs) and Denair RB Dylan Souza (184 yards, 12-yard average, 3 TDs) handling the ball. Could turn into a shootout.

• Johansen (1-2) at Golden Valley (1-1) -- Both think they have a shot at a playoff berth, and a win here would make that a better possibility. Vikings have a good air game with QB Armando Hernandez (516 yards, 8 TDs), but can the Vikings contain GV RB Tyler Arnsberg (264 yards, 4 TDs)? After giving up 200 yards to Central Valley's Tyree Jones, Vikings need to improve.

• Gustine (0-2) at Orestimba (1-1) -- No longer in the same league, it's good to see Westside rivals continuing their emotional rivalry. Orestimba has a strong core of skill players, and the chance to see QB Ravonne Pious attack with his arm and feet should produce an entertaining event.
