Kids Parade set for Chelsea Community Fair

Posted: 22 Aug 2010 05:36 AM PDT

The Chelsea Community Fair will kick-off with the kids fair parade on Aug. 24. The parade is for young children ages 3 to 14 with decorated bikes, wagons, etc., to ride and walk from downtown Chelsea to the fairgrounds, where kid games and other activities await their arrival.

The parade will form in the municipal lot behind the Common Grill. The route will go down Middle Street to Grant Street, to Pierce Street (past South Meadows School) and onto Taylor Street across Old US-12 and down Chelsea-Manchester Road to the bottom gate of the fairgrounds. The route has been changed to go down Chelsea-Manchester Road in order to clear Old US-12 and to avoid the crowds at the front gate.

Judging of decorated bikes, wagons, etc., will begin at 5 p.m., and the parade will begin at 5:30 p.m. The 2009 fair queen and the 2010 candidates will lead the parade.

Parents are reminded that for the safety of everyone, they should walk with younger kids in the parade and that no gas powered vehicles or horses are allowed in the kids' part of the parade.

The fair book lists complete details about age groups and prizes. Parents with questions can contact Sam Vogel, Kiwanis Key Club advisor at 475-7831. The parade is sponsored and su-pervised by the Chelsea High School Key Club and the Chelsea Kiwanis Club.

Kids Receive Backpacks Full of School Supplies

Posted: 21 Aug 2010 02:31 PM PDT

Thousands of kids in Marathon County are now the proud owners of new backpacks filled with school supplies thanks to the Fill a Backpack Fill a Need program.

On Saturday, nearly 3,000 kids came to the Wausau National Guard Armory to receive a backpack full of folders, notebooks, pencils, pens and more.

"Every school has a supply sheet that they send home with the kids. They're actually making it generic so all the schools have basically the same supplies and those are the supplies we put inside the backpack," Jamie Potter, a volunteer said.

This queue is new this year and has helped the line run more smoothly. Some people started lining up as early as midnight in anticipation of that one item kids are most looking forward to.

"I like the backpack. They're really cool and they have lots of pockets."

"You don't have to go all over the place for all the school supplies that you have to get because it's all in the backpack that you get."

"I like this backpack because I really like to play X-games."

But not all kids like the backpack best.

"I like getting the toothbrush because you can get whatever color you want."

"I like the school supplies because it saves mom money and that's what pays the bills and stuff."

And that's what the parents are happiest with: saving some cash.

"It's a great big help especially with the economy the way that it is and the way that things are going. It's a real great big help for us to come here and get this stuff and we appreciate everything everybody's done," Chris Davis, a parent said.

"This is our third year getting them and it's been a big help because it takes a lot of the pressure off getting all the school supplies and getting the backpacks. It's been wonderful for us....It's our first year participating and it's nice to know that the kids are going back to school with everything they're going to need for a good year."

To receive free backpacks through the program, kids must be qualified to get free lunches from the state.

A record 4,400 students were eligible this year.

Students, staff bring kids to UNCC for day

Posted: 22 Aug 2010 07:15 AM PDT

Pizza, hotdogs, popcorn and a whole lot of fun.

What?s missing from this equation? The smiling faces of cupcake covered kids.

Monday from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. at the Belk Tower was Kids on Kampus day.

Many organizations and clubs on campus, along with those in the surrounding area sponsored this event. Some of which include the Executive Branch of the Student Government Association, Gray?s Bookstore, Alpha Kappa Psi and the Black Student Union.

The event was intended to bring awareness to UNC Charlotte about the need of an on-campus daycare.

According to Student Body President Brett Pendergrass, ?Kids on Kampus was a success.?

?The campus daycare doesn?t have to be cheaper because it?s just more convenient,? said mechanical engineering major Nicole Bowden.

The Student Government Association is raising $2 million to build an on-campus daycare. Once the building is complete, the daycare will be available to all UNCC parents including faculty, students and staff.

UNCC employee Scott Wilkerson said, ?I think we most definitely need an on-campus daycare because that way I can bring my daughter here on the way to work, instead of having to take a detour to drop her off.?

At 3 p.m., guest speaker and democratic mayoral candidate, Ella Scarborough spoke about UNCC?s need for an on-campus daycare.

?We wouldn?t have to wake up so early, we?d have more time to study and if something were to happen to our son, we could pick him up sooner,? said parents and UNCC students, Kelly and Carlos Sanchez.

The event was filled with children, parents and volunteers coming together to create a fun-filled day. Free food, games, face painting, balloons, the Moon Bounce, a sea of balls and Double Shot (a basketball shooting game) were among the many activities that caught the eyes of children.

For all those who enjoyed the festivities, Pendergrass said, ?We are planning a Kids on Kampus day again in the spring.?
