Kids' games, a strongman contest, "Golf Around Vail", a slowpitch softball tournament and a performance by The King and His Court softball team are among a full slate of activities planned for Vail Fun Days scheduled for Saturday, August 7.

Kids are singing their praises for Vacation Bible Study

Kids are rejoicing about the chance to learn more about religion, thanks to a week-long Vacation Bible Study that is being hosted by the Salvation Army in Northwest Houston.

The Salvation Army Boys & Girls Clubs of Metropolitan Houston have been keeping the kids busy with all the events they've been hosting in the month of August. From soccer workshops to car wash fundraising, there's a plethora of opportunities for children to get involved at the Northwest Branch.

However, many kids agree that the ultimate event that surpasses all the rest is the Vacation Bible Study, a program that teaches lessons from the Bible through innovative methods.

Songs of praise, board games and theatrical performances are all showcased at the event. Two children in particular, who have attended vacation bible study in the past, wholeheartedly give the program their stamp of approval.

Tyrae Thornton, who is returning to the Salvation Army for the second year, says the simple format of the teachings help him grasp a better understanding.

"It's a more fun way to learn it and it's easier," Thornton said

Mickayla Alaniz, who is going to the fifth grade, looks back on the memory of past bible studies with a sense of delight. She says she can't wait to be apart of this year's experience, still remembering the lessons from the previous sessions.

"It was fun," she said. "We learned that God sacrificed himself for us."

The material is specifically tailored for children under the age of 12. Some say the program is a top ranking favorite of kids for that very reason.

"The Bible study is on their level. It's completely focused on them and they enjoy it," Lt. Sarah Gottlich, assistant Corps officer, said. "It's a fun week (and) it's at the end of the summer as kind of a hoopla before they go back to school."

The event is being held from Aug. 9 to Aug. 13 at 12507 Windfern Road. The program, which lasts from 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., is open to all children ages five to 12.

"The Salvation Army is a church and everything we do is motivated by the love of Christ. We want as many kids to know about Jesus Christ as much as possible," Gottlich said. "When they step in the doors they are not club kids. They are the kids that God put in our path."

Thornton says he enjoys spending time at the facility because of the entertaining pastimes and friendly professionals.

"I like it because we get to make friends," he said. "I like the field trips and all the staff is really nice too."

Alaniz was not bashful in declaring her appreciation for the Salvation Army northwest establishment as well.

"My favorite thing is when we get to do the arts and crafts," she said. "We have fun everywhere we go."

Hospital gets new games, DVDs for kids

AURORA - A few weeks ago, a teenager expressed the need for more Xbox 360 and Wii games for the sick kids at The Children's Hospital.

The hospital says they are happy to report that the response has been overwhelming since volunteer Amber Besserra, a high school student from Boulder, voiced the need for more games for the patients.

Amber was reorganizing the loaning library used by patients when she realized the kids at the hospital needed more video games for the Xboxes in every patient's room. She also saw the need for more recent movies on DVD.

Children's Hospital would like to thank everyone who donated a DVD or video game to their library.
