| Keeping kids cool today's hot topic Posted: 23 Jul 2010 12:10 AM PDT Program leaders will strive to keep kids cool today as temperatures threaten to reach the mid-90s and the heat index might exceed 100 degrees. The Wildcat Baseball League is celebrating its Mr. Mac Day today at Kreager Park. While kids from 11 different sites compete in the all-star games, relays and open competitions in distance throwing, running the bases and throwing accuracy, the staff will watch for signs of heat exhaustion and other effects from the weather. "We just make sure the staff is aware about the heat and what the signs are," Wildcat assistant commissioner Gary Rogers said. "If they see a kid that shows some of those signs, they'll get him into the shade or get her water." The league has put up extra tents to provide shade and made sure to supply plenty of water to keep participants and parents hydrated. Rogers said they expect as many as 3,000 people to attend. "Being an outside summer program, we have to deal with the weather and the heat advisories," Rogers said. "We talk to our staff all the time. Our staff is trained by the Red Cross on what to look for, and we have first aid training every year." With a projected end time of 12:30 p.m., Rogers said the league is hoping to beat the real heat of the day and get everyone out of the sun before things get too hot. A heat advisory from the National Weather Service is in effect for northeast Indiana from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. People are advised to drink plenty of fluids, stay out of the sun and stay in air-conditioned rooms. The combination of heat and humidity poses a risk of heat stress for those participating in outdoor activities. The Cub Scout Resident Camp in Pleasant Lake works to ensure campers can enjoy activities while staying safe and properly hydrated, said Nathan Sikora, council program director. "We try to do everything we can to make sure they stay as cool and as happy as possible," Sikora said. Campers take part in aquatics, archery, handicrafts and other activities. Covered shelters are available at each activity area, and kids are provided with plenty of breaks. Campers are required to carry their own water bottle at all times and are encouraged to drink at each activity. "Along with the water and the ample rest time and the shelters, the safety of our youth is our No. 1 concern," Sikora said.
