| Camp Genesis offers a week away for kids with cancer in their families Posted: 11 Jul 2010 08:37 PM PDT BLUE GRASS, Iowa - Camp songs and games may help some Quad Cities children forget for a moment, that people they love are sick. Every camper at Camp Genesis has a relative with cancer and that leaves less time for just being a kid. "There's something special about this group, the Camp Genesis group. We do our best to really treat them like kids, let them be kids, let them have fun for the week," said Zack Klipsch, camp director. Families registered their children at the campgrounds Sunday. The 40 campers will spend this week at Camp Abe Lincoln near Blue Grass. The kids are fighting a tough battle of their own while their loved ones at home battle cancer. "There's a sacrifice that goes along with them as well so we want to give them a chance to come out to camp, have fun like every other kid like they are, but at the same time they can build some bonds with kids who are going through similar stuff," said Klipsch. Campers will spend the week playing games, hiking, and learning more about the disease. Some want to send a message of support to cancer patients. "We're trying to get the message out to them, we're trying to help them, trying to get their strength back. We don't want them to grow with cancer the rest of their life," said Clayton Melvin, a Camp Genesis camper. Not even in their teens, some campers say they'll spend the week having fun but won't forget why they came. Extraordinary maturity, shown at such a young age. "If you're watching tonight, please, if you have a family member give them a call tomorrow. Just get them on the phone and tell them we're out here to support you here," said Melvin. The campers will have the chance this week to tour the Genesis Cancer Care Institute. Staff from Gilda's Club will also be available as a resource for information and emotional support.
