SULLIVANS ISLAND, S.C. (AP) - Kids from the 21st century learn games their counterparts played in the 17th and 18th centuries during a program at a national monument on the South Carolina coast.

National Junior Ranger Day is being observed on Saturday at Fort Moultrie on Sullivans Island.

Children ages 12 and younger learn games children played in centuries past such as hoop and stick, hop scotch and duck, duck, goose.

Junior Ranger programs are offered at national parks across the country and help children and their parents connect with the parks.

Alika Rabbit Garden opens with kids crafts, games

Keiki can fold paper butterflies and create other garden crafts, enjoy a display with real rabbits, and explore a variety of unusual veggies at Alika Rabbit Garden, the newest addition to the Children's Garden at the University of Hawai'i-Manoa's College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources Urban Garden Center, 9 a.m. to noon today in Pearl City.

The new garden's grand opening will be the focal point of the center's Second Saturday at the Garden event. Alika Rabbit Garden offers a multi-station educational adventure based on the Beatrix Potter children's story "The Tale of Peter Rabbit." Also included in today's festivities: a kiddie tent with games that include watering a plant, "ringing" rabbit ears, tossing seeds at a target and going on a scavenger hunt. Other highlights: garden tours, entertainment, seed packet giveaways for children, a "mini" sale of plants and more. Admission is free. For more information, call 453-6050.
