DUBAI — Video games and other audiovisual aids can help distract children and ease pain, according to a study done locally to prove the effectiveness of new techniques in reducing discomfort during dental procedures.
A study conducted by the Ajman University of Science and Technology among 60 healthy children aged between five and 11 years with no previous dental experience proved that audiovisual distraction and use of video games was effective in reducing pain reaction in clinical settings. In a poster presentation during a recently held dental conference, Dr Yasmin Mohammed and Dr Huda Ahmed who conducted the study said the trial was done to compare the reaction of children towards local anaesthesia (given by injection) by use of AV distraction versus other routine local anaesthesia techniques. The presentation said the AV distraction is effective in reducing pain reaction in a clinical setting but it should be used in routine local anaesthetic procedures for more effective results. "Distraction is a tactic designed to divert a patient's attention away from the current behaviour to focus their interest in something else such as video game or any other audiovisual distraction," said the presentation. Other techniques that dentists in the country are using to distract patients, especially children, are slow needle insertion, hypnosis, topical anaesthesia, and computer simulations. "This is an effective method that is now being used quite commonly the world over," agreed a Sharjah-based dentist, Nilofer Kazmi. "Dentists are also using methods such as decorating their clinics with toys or colours and cartoon characters that can attract children and calm them before the procedure," she added. To manage difficult children, several clinics also offer treatment under general anaesthesia.

The Santa Maria YMCA is inviting local families to an event that's all about promoting a healthy lifestyle for kids. The annual "Healthy Kids Day" kicks off Saturday at noon. Organizers say there will be sports and carnival games, along with obstacle courses for the kids. Plus, it gives the community access to come much-needed health services. "We've got some blood pressure we've got some dental screening we've some different general health assessments that i'm not a part of but what i'm going to be doing personally is checking peoples spines," said organizer, Matt Egbert. Organizers anticipate hundreds of people will take part in the event. It begins at noon and lasts until 4:00p.m. Friday. The Santa Maria YMCA is located on the 3400 blk. of Skyway Dr.

THERESA CAMPBELL Staff Writer LEESBURG -- More than 160 children will be cheered today -- by members of the Leesburg Police Department and public -- during the Junior Athletic Games. The games begin at 8 a.m. today inside the football stadium at Leesburg High School, 1401 Yellow Jacket Way, Leesburg. The public is invited. "This teaches them about good sportsmanship," Leesburg police Sgt. George Whittaker said of the 10-year games, which will bring together children from third- to fifth-grades from Beverly Shores, Leesburg and Fruitland Park elementary schools in a series of competitions, including a football and softball throw, 40-yard dash, long jump and soccer ball kick. The first, second and third-place finishers will receive medals and all others will receive certificates of achievement. "We'll also give an overall trophy -- a traveling trophy -- to the school that has the most winners," Whittaker said, adding that will be a new prize offered at the games. "Our goal is to show kids how to get involved in sports," Whittaker said, recalling the games initially began as a way for police officers to interact with youths in a positive way. "We were looking for ways to hang out with kids and for them to see a better side of us, rather than the policeman who stops their Mom or Dad," he said. "This is our way of doing something for the community, it shows the kids good sportsmanship, and we really do enjoy doing this with the kids." Five Filters featured article: Chilcot Inquiry. | Children's kicks off campaign at A-Day games Posted: 16 Apr 2010 09:09 PM PDT BIRMINGHAM — A high-tech, soft-touch campaign to raise funds for the state's ill and injured kids treated at Children's Hospital kicks off this weekend at the A-Day spring football games at the University of Alabama and Auburn University. A new text-giving program will allow football fans and supporters everywhere to text "CHILDREN" to 50555 to make a quick-and-easy $10 donation to the state's only freestanding pediatric hospital. A multi-media awareness campaign on both campuses will include game announcements, signage, spots on the TV broadcast of the games and messages on the video boards in both stadiums. Chris Stewart, of the Crimson Tide Sports Network, and Gene Chizik, head football coach of the Auburn Tigers, have taped special messages for fans of their respective schools. Children's text-giving program is a one-time $10 donation. The donation will appear on the owner's next mobile bill as a separate line item, recognized as a tax-deductible donation. No extra or hidden fees but message and data rates may apply. The Children's Hospital of Alabama is the 10th busiest pediatric medical center in the United States. Located in Birmingham, Children's is one of only about 45 freestanding acute care hospitals of its kind in the nation and the only hospital in Alabama dedicated solely to the care and treatment of children. It is licensed for 275 beds. Children's is a private, not-for-profit hospital governed by a volunteer board of trustees. The hospital was recently recognized for the excellence of its nursing care by achieving Magnet designation from the American Nurses Credentialing Center. Children's will celebrate its centennial anniversary in 2011. Five Filters featured article: Chilcot Inquiry. Available tools: PDF Newspaper, Full Text RSS, Term Extraction. |
