Warnock poised to blood kids

Posted: 22 Apr 2010 03:08 AM PDT

QPR manager Neil Warnock is set to turn to the club's kids for the final two games of the season - but only because he has no choice.

Warnock wanted to blood some of his youngsters once Rangers were safe this season but out of respect for the relegation battle he played a virtually full-strength side against struggling Watford on Tuesday night.

After beating the Hornets 1-0, Warnock was left with a fresh spate of injuries to midfielders Adel Taarabt, Akos Buzsaky and Alejandro Faurlin.

"I think the time for experimenting will be against Barnsley and Newcastle," said Warnock. "Although now it won't be experimenting, it will probably be whoever is fit.

"We are losing quite a lot of players at the minute and we haven't got that many. But I'd like to give Barnsley a good game and Newcastle a good game."

Teaching our Kids about the Planet | Daily Sundial

Posted: 21 Apr 2010 10:58 PM PDT

Teaching our kids about how our planet works and the things that we can do to help our environment can be difficult especially when their heads are consumed with video games and the latest technology.  April 22nd marks the 40th anniversary of Earth Day so there's no better time than now to get the kids involved in helping to preserve our beautiful planet.

Just a simple walk outdoors can provide you and your child with ways to discuss and discover our planet.  Spring is the perfect time for a nature walk or hiking experience and there are several parks in the area that offer easy and safe trails for kids, such as: Topanga State Park, Balboa Park or Malibu Creek State Park.  Even a walk around the neighborhood with the magnifying class can provide a closer look at the different trees, bugs and different types of life that belong to our planet.

There are several books offered that provide not only information about our planet and the environment, but that also give activities on how to be part of the solution to save it.  The classic book "The Lorax" by Dr. Seuss and "The Giving Tree" by Shel Silverstein, both are sweet fictional tales for all ages that presents a look into the importance of understanding and giving to our planet and the environment.  "Green Crafts for Children" by Emma Hardy or "Recycled Crafts Box," by Laura C. Martin, both give ways for kids to make fun crafts with reusable materials.

There are also festivals being given around the Los Angeles area to honor Earth Day.  On Sunday, April 25th from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m, Star Eco Station is having their 10th annual Children's Earth Day festival, admission is free and tours of the Star Eco Station are $5.  Kids will have the chance to meet celebrity guests and environmental heroes, eat exotic foods, play Eco games, and make environmentally conscious crafts.  There will be live entertainment and giveaways.  It's located at The Non-Profit Environmental Science Museum & Exotic Wildlife Rescue Center in Culver City, for more information go to www.ecostation.org.

What's it like in Junior Angels Kids Club?

Posted: 21 Apr 2010 01:50 PM PDT

One of the great things about being a parent and a sports fan is being able to introduce your kids to the sports and teams that you love.

My parents brought my brother and me to Angels games starting from when we were young kids. Those experiences have stayed with me my whole life and are a large part of my memories of my childhood summers.

My husband John and I have two daughters, ages 7 and 4. And these sweet girls are as girly-girl as can be. There is a lot of princess, glitter, and pink in our house. Lots of pink. Those who know me well would agree that this is just more confirmation that God has an awesome sense of humor.

Now I'm not one to stifle their creativity or expression. And I have fully embraced my "inner color pink". But I also attempt to achieve a bit of balance in my house by exposing them to some other interests of my own. You know, like introducing them to the musical genius of Lennon/McCartney and Henley/Frey or explaining the stunning inspiration of mid-century modern design.

And sports.

Every spring and summer the girls receive a healthy dose of Angels baseball (and likewise, Anaheim Ducks hockey every fall and winter). We have been bringing them to games each summer since they were infants, dressed in various sizes of Angels onesies and caps. If we aren't at the game, they often join us to watch the team on TV. They love it. The younger one was able to recognize Vladimir Guerrero on freeway billboards as a two year old. (I'm not sure if I'm supposed to be proud of that, but I am).

Recently, our older daughter has started asking specific questions about how the game is played. It's been simple things, centered mainly on balls and strikes, number of innings, etc. But she wants to know more about it; she wants to learn.

I thought it would be fun to sign them up this year for the Junior Angels Kids Club. It's a great program to help introduce your young ones to the game of baseball. For $18, your child gets a jersey, two (2) game ticket vouchers, (1) All-Star FanFest child's admission, plus several other items. You can sign up at the stadium during games, or like me, you can register online (pay an extra $2 convenience fee) and they will ship the kit directly to your home. You can find more information about the Junior Angels Kids Club here.

When we received our Kids Club kits, I gave them to the girls and they wasted no time diving into the boxes and pulling each and every item out. I followed with my camera and documented what they did with those items over the days to follow. Take a look at the slide show to see how much fun they had.
