| Kids enjoy activities at park Posted: 10 Apr 2010 09:21 PM PDT Kids enjoy activities at parkBy JOLENE CRAIG jcraig@newsandsentinel.comPARKERSBURG - Children of all ages and sizes played games, enjoyed crafts and got some education during the annual Kids' Day at the City Park Pavilion Saturday. "This year has been very well," said Kristin Walker, event organizer. "We've had more than 200 children come in and have a good time." Walker said she and the other organizers did not know how many children would attend this year's event because they felt last year's attendance of more than 150 children was due to the annual Kids' Fishing Derby, which was going on at the same time. "Last year's event had more than double the expected attendance so we thought we would be down to about 100 or so kids because we're on a different weekend from the fishing derby," Walker said. Walker said there is a different theme for each year's Kids' Day. This year all of the games, crafts and stories centered around family. "The crafts include family trees and cards and little things like that for the kids to understand how important families are," she said. Sports activities included the "treasure walk," which is like a cake walk but with a toy prize, and cornhole. Rachel Hyde of Waverly brought her children Judah, 12; Eliza, 8; and Julia, 3; and a friend Rorey Fields, 12, to volunteer for the two-hour event. "I thought it would be a good thing for the older children to work with younger children and help them do things," Hyde said. "Plus, being here together was something we could do as a family." Sheila Jackson, president of West Virginia Family and Community Education, said that the event is great for kids of all ages. "When here, the parents and grandparents get to play with the kids and that is really up-lifting to see," she said. "The kids just seem to have a ball with the cornhole and crafts and games that it makes all of the hard work worth it." Five Filters featured article: Chilcot Inquiry.
