| Kids Expo brings families, community together (Manitowoc Herald Times Reporter) Posted: 28 Mar 2010 02:16 AM PDT (2 of 2) Plenty of kids also lined up at the Manitowoc Police Department booth, waiting to get their chance to sit in a patrol car. Manitowoc Police Lt. Paul Schermetzler explained to the children the buttons and gadgets inside the car. Jordan Gallas, 11, and David Sand, 8, of St. Nazianz, both said the computer inside the patrol car was "the coolest." "They (police) can talk to other officers to track them down and if they catch someone speeding they can pull up a list from their license (plate) and I.D. them," Gallas said. Sand said he liked turning on the red and blue patrol lights, but preferred scoring goals at the Manitowoc County Youth Hockey Association booth. "I want to play hockey now," Sand said while turning to ask his mother, Brandy Konieczny, whether he could join a team. Cameron Yelmene, 7, of Manitowoc, also enjoyed the hockey booth. "I like shooting around because you can play with other people," said Yelmene, who also wants to join a hockey team. However, some kids like Thayne Neumann, 9, were just in it for the candy. Thayne said collecting the candy various sponsors handed out was the best part of his day. Rhonda Neumann, of Manitowoc, brought her other kids, Kade, 5, and twins Bram and Emjay, 2, to the event to "get out of the house." "It's good to get to do something different instead of sitting at home in front of the TV," she said. Five Filters featured article: Chilcot Inquiry. | Ideas for a fun-filled spring stay-cation with the kids (The Journal News) Posted: 27 Mar 2010 11:58 PM PDT (2 of 2) The John C. Hart Memorial Library, 1130 E. Main St. in Shrub Oak, is also hosting a spring vacation event. "Amazing Animals" at 2 p.m. Thursday will give children ages 4 to 6 an opportunity to meet and touch a variety of small mammals and reptiles. A similar program, "Amazing Reptiles" at 3 p.m. Thursday, will allow children ages 7 and up to experience a variety of turtles, lizards and snakes, including 12-foot Julius Squeezer. Registration for both programs is required. If the kids have soaked up those library visits, check out the local youth centers for more exciting activities. The Cortlandt Youth Center, 3 Memorial Drive in Croton-on-Hudson, will host a movie night at 6 p.m. Tuesday. The film has not yet been determined. The "Festive Spring Affair" that includes baking, cupcake decorating, games, sports activities, crafts, snacks and prizes will go from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. Wednesday. The youth center's rock climbing wall will be open from 7:30 to 10:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and participants can play a variety of sporting games, including football, basketball and hockey. The center accepts kids age 11 to 18 who live in the town of Cortlandt. Becky Ferguson, the assistant youth director, said the center can see between 70 to 90 kids on Friday nights. Over at the Yorktown Teen Center, 1974 Commerce St., Suite 102, there will be gym activities, along with video and board games offered from 3 to 6 p.m. Wednesday. The Harrison Apar Video Club, where kids make videos together and post them on YouTube, will meet from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday. The teen center is open from 4 to 8 p.m. that day. On Friday, the center's hours of operation are from 4 to 10 p.m. The gym will be open and there will also be an alumni event that evening. The Yorktown Teen Center is open to 12ÿ to 18-year-old Yorktown residents and their friends. A $5 donation on gym night is suggested for non-members. "The kids in town who don't travel like to have some time to be with their friends rather than hang out and be bored at home," said Helena Rodriguez, the center board president. A trip to the movies is usually a great diversion. For this spring holiday, why not check out Peekskill's landmark theater, the Paramount Center for the Arts, 1008 Brown St., for a twist on cinema. The Paramount will present Laurel & Hardy Shorts accompanied by live jazz at 3 p.m. today. Steven Bernstein's Millennial Territory Orchestra will play along to the classic, funny duo's antics. Bernstein has created original scores to three Laurel & Hardy films including "Double Whoopee," Wrong Again" and "Sugar Daddies." Admission is $10 for kids and $20 for adults. Also at the Paramount, check out "The African Queen," the 1951 film starring Katharine Hepburn and Humphrey Bogart, at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday. A talk with author Eileen Considine-Meara will follow the movie. Considine-Meara wrote "At Home With Kate — Growing Up in Katharine Hepburn's Household," and will share her personal memories of Hepburn. Five Filters featured article: Chilcot Inquiry. | Apolo Anton Ohno Sets Slime World Record At Kids' Choice Awards (MTV Music Television) Posted: 27 Mar 2010 08:33 PM PDT
As an Olympic speed skater, Apolo Anton Ohno is no stranger to setting records. The eight-time medalist became the Winter Olympics' most decorated athlete during the 2010 games. But Ohno set a new gold standard at Saturday's (March 27) 23rd annual Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards, catapulting into the slime world-record books.
For the show's grand finale, the "Dancing With the Stars" champ strapped himself into the Slime Slingshot, a human catapult that would sling him 60 yards in the air, through a goal post and into a small pool of gooey, green slime. Giving the thumbs-up sign to Slime Stunt Correspondent John Cena, Ohno "flew" through the air, cannon-balling into the waiting vat. Submerged for several seconds, Ohno rose, splashing slime on the onlookers surrounding the pool. Following the stunt, Ohno gave this detailed play-by-play: "Right here, I start peeing my pants," he joked, reliving climbing into the catapult. "Then I'm thinking, 'I can see my house from here.' Finally, I'm thinking, 'Would it have killed them to heat up the slime pool a little bit?' " Ohno was one of several famous faces to be doused in Nickelodeon's signature green slime, including "Twilight" star Jackson Rathbone, singer Katy Perry and "Date Night" co-stars Tina Fey and Steve Carell. Despite his messy appearance, Ohno tweeted, "That was fun ... KCA is the place to be!!" following the ceremony. What did you think of Apolo's stunt? Let us know in the comments below!
